Foley Artist

Have you ever wondered about the sound in the movies you watch? Why you can hear that footstep or that stream so clearly when it’s so far away? Its Foley artists you can thank for that. Their job is to manually create sound that the camera does not pick up. That’s what the word Foley means, to produce sound effects for motion picture manually (Collins English Dictionary). The term Foley artist is named after a sound producer for Universal Studios, Jack Foley, a pioneer of his time, (Collins English Dictionary). Enough about what it is; it’s time to tell you what they do. It takes a very special person to be a Foley artist, the work conditions are hard, one must have to have a special ear for it, but without them, the movie experience would be dull.

The work conditions of a Foley artist are different than normal jobs. One must work in a studio or a warehouse with tons of props and recording devices. They watch the footage and try to recreate that sound; sometimes they have to deal with loud noises that they create. Their work schedule can vary, and deadlines must be met. They are known to work all night but if there’s plenty of time they work a normal nine to five day. Foley artists are picking up and throwing down props all day to make sound. One might slide a cinderblock across the room or anything else to accomplish the desired sound. The job can be quite strenuous at times, but as a Foley artist you get to play every character in the film. They play every characters footsteps, every scratching movement, and all the sounds of any person moving the artist has to play out and time correctly (Splish, Splash). That part isn’t as bad, its even fun at times.

In order to be a Foley artist one has to have a special ear, as well as a good imagination. They have to see something on screen and ask themselves “What would that thing sound like?”, and then make that sound using other items. So when one sees a giant stone rolling down a hill they might record a car in neutral rolling down a hill or see a thousand rats in a tunnel and record lots of chickens and change the pitch (The Sound of Indiana). That’s the fun of Foley, one gets to make anything sound like anything, within reason of course. Because the sound must match the image on the screen, if it doesn’t the audience gets confused. So a Foley artist has to have an imagination to make sounds that sound like other things. In some movies such as Indiana Jones and Star Wars there are things on screen that the audience has never seen before and t

he artist gets to make up what this thing might sound like. In Raiders of the Lost Ark when they take off the lid of the Ark the sound it makes is actually a toilet bowl lid (The Sound of Indiana). This confirms that one needs a good ear and imagination to be a Foley artist.

When one is a Foley artist, it’s a good idea to keep a library of sound (The Sound of Indiana). If they have a chance to get sound to put in their library they don’t pass it up because one never knows when it will be needed. There is already a big library of sound out there in the world, and there’s no problem in using it. That’s what it’s there for. However the movie seems to have an extra something when a Foley artist uses their own library or records something specific for that movie.

The best thing about being a Foley artist is that without them the movie experience would be dull and uneventful. Imagine if every gunshot, explosion, and footstep sound was not heard at all. The quiet suspense of a horror movie would not be suspenseful. An action movie would not be as thrilling without the bullet sounds whizzing by the main characters face. The movie experience in general would not be at all the same, that’s why we need Foley artists in the movie industry today.

The MTV VMA'S

The MTV video music awards were last night and it was very interesting. Lynsey Lohan made a surprise video appearance for the intro. It made fun of her trials and really did her well, it put Lynsey in a better light. Sher also made a surprise appearance to announce one of the awards. Sher teased about her age and how she is older then everyone there. She ware a tiny see through body suit thing with a leather jacket,(just as a side not she looked so good in it considering her age). The most ridicules outfit though was Lady Ga Ga's meat dress. this dress was all raw meat, complete with shoes, a steak hat and a meat purse. How far will this girl go, but to give her credit she didn't wear it for the whole show. She changed at least 3 or 4 times during the show, all of witch were crazy and over the top. What i like though is you could see her face, she had very nice makeup on that unlike usual made her look very nice.

miss universe padgent photos

There are some very controversial photos from the miss universe pictures out. Instead of the normal bikini and swim suit shots like yu see here, the miss universe pageant had there contestants pose topless with just body art. Has the pageant gone to far? I think they have, this is not what i think little girls should be looking up to. This is not art, it might be pretty but it's not appropriate! If we keep this going instead of bikini contest there will be a topless contest, the pageant has just gone to far.

flight attendent

This week I was watching the news and a story came on about a flight attendant, there was a lady with a one year old kid on her flight. The kid was acting up and the mother "hit" the child. When the flight attendant witnessed this she took the child for the duration of the flight. The captain called the police to meet the mother when she got off the plane where they escorted her and the kid to their connecting flight. Now the mother said she didn't hit her child she popped the one year old. I'm all for discipline but not in the face, and especially not in the face of a one year old. I believe the flight attendant handled it just right. She didn't cause a scene or yell at the mother, she just took the kid off the mothers hands for a little while and let the police handle the rest.

Inception

The movie Inception was a great movie. It has a very interesting movie that dealt with giving people ideas through their dreams. It talked about the different levels of sleep, and how time is different in those levels. You could dream what seems like for hours and only be asleep for a few minuets also the deeper you sleep the harder it is to wake up. Anyways the movie is great, it's an action that makes you think. What i mean by that is it's an action movie with guns and lots of fighting but if you don't pay attention you'll get lost in the plot line. The end really makes you think, it's a twist that makes everyone leave the theater talking and debating what happens next. I highly recommend this movie from both a film students point of view and a normal audience member. Go see it.

Reality TV Shows

The United States has reality TV fever, and it makes sense. It's intriguing for the audience and cheap to make for the company. However I say how cheap are we going to get, and I don't mean money wise I mean sleazy. I understand contests that we vote on, that's interesting and gets the viewer involved. I mean reality TV like the bachelor, wife swap, and all these "dating" shows. Do people actually believe there real? I believe these shows are scripted, disgusting and wrong. Then again people like Jerry springer and Maury have been splashing peoples problems on screen for years and calling it entertaining. So I say stop trying to fool everyone and move reality shows like that to day time TV and put some real scripted shows on night time TV.

Smallville

I believe the best drama the CW has ever created is Smallville. It has everything you need in a drama. Both HOT guys and girls, action, suspense, and fantasy. If you've never seen Smallville it's about Superman before he was Superman, his high school and college years. One thing that makes it stand out in my eyes is the making and editing of all the episodes, everything is so clean and mixes together so well. That's just one film students opinion. The only thing bad I have to say about it is that Smallville has been on the air for nine seasons now, and they have gotten so far away from the "comic book" Superman and he still isn't him.
Smallville is my favorite show and has made Superman my favorite super hero.
